Live Wedding Band

live bandI had to wait until I went to university before I saw my first live band, ever since I’ve been hooked. I dreamed of having a live band play at our wedding. I had Oasis in mind, to be precise, as Dave and I had been thrust together on the dance floor at my sisters wedding when the DJ was playing ‘Wonderwall’ -  the rest as they say is history.

Are you planning a live wedding band? Tell us about it.

I contacted Oasis, as you do, asking them if they did weddings, but can you believe it, I didn’t get a reply! So that was the end of all thoughts of a live band and they were quickly replaced by trying to find the perfect DJ.

Looking back on it though, I could have contacted Oasisn’t, the Oasis tribute band, as they do functions as well as gigs.  I didn’t pursue having a live band play at our wedding, because, like many couples, Dave and I were sceptical that we wouldn’t be able to find a live band that would be able to entertain all our guests, plus we were also conscious that it would probably cost more to hire a live band, rather than a DJ.

However, since then I have looked into more and was pleased to find that the many live function bands do indeed have a wide repertoire of songs and will only be too happy to play songs that your guests will recognise, and in doing so you will very quickly have everyone dancing and singing the whole night through!

Should you have a Live Band?

So, if you are one of these couples faced with trying to decide whether to have a live band or a DJ, bear in mind the following key factors:

  • Personal music preference for you and your guests.
  • Your budget.
  • Availability of a suitable live act.

Choosing a Live Wedding Band

If you decide that a live wedding band is what you want for your reception we have prepared a checklist of things you should consider and check before making the booking.

  • They must be available for your wedding day.
  • You have exclusive use of the band on your wedding day, as you don’t want them rushing from one venue to the next.
  • Check that the band are able to visit the venue before hand to ensure its suitability.
  • Find out if you have to pay a deposit and whether it is refundable or not.
  • Find out the total cost of hiring the live band, including travel cost and VAT, if applicable, ensure there are no hidden extras. Confirm this in writing.
  • Ensure they have experience playing at weddings.
  • Ask if you can listen to a demo tape.
  • Can you see them play in a pub / club?
  • Ensure they can play a range of songs which cater for a wide range of different tastes.
  • Will you be expected to provide changing room facilities?
  • Will you be expected to provide food and refreshments for the band members?
  • How long do they need to set up and tidy away their equipment.
  • Ensure they will provide all the equipment needed, including extension cables, to hold the gig.
  • That they will agree the set list before your wedding day.

"We have a swing jazz band. They played great music, some slow and romantic for dancing and some really fast and modernt stuff. It was way better than having a DJ." Tony, Essex
