Seward acts as a gateway to the Kenai Peninsula and the rest of Alaska. It is one of the oldest cities in Alaska dating back to 1793 when the then governor of Russia landed and named Resurrection Bay. Tourism has exploded in this remote location and offers some outsanding fishing, hiking and kayaking opportunities.
- Kenai Fjords National Park has an abundance of wildlife and a multitude of breathtaking landscapes. Within this land of constant change you can see wild bears, whales and ice worms and earthquakes that are entwined with ocean stormes which are very much the architects. - Chugah National Forest can be likened to the same size as Massachusetts and Rhodes Island combined. Only 500 miles south of the Arctic Circle this forest is a land of moving rocks and ice with a background of mountains, lakes and rivers.
Whittier was first established as a strategic military facility during the first world war and has been used mainly for freight transfers during marine activities.
The 2.5 mile tunnel build in 1941 was once the largest in the world and since June 1943 it enables a link line with the Alaskan outpost by sea or land. It is still the longest vehicle tunnel in North America. With surrounding snowcapped mountains the town is nestled at the base with views of hanging glaciers.
