Honeymoon Checklist

honeymoonBefore you pack your suitcase and pick up your passports to go on your honeymoon you should consider making yourself a check list to make doubly sure that you will enjoy your long awaited honeymoon with no worries, troubles or let downs!

Once you have decided where to go on your honeymoon you should include on your check list monthly notes and then as time gets closer to the date, weekly 'things to do' notes as well as follow ups on dates, timings, hotel bookings and flight times.

Important documents are vital and if forgotten could end up spoiling the honeymoon you have waited so long for, as would the 'must haves' while away. A quick list below should help jog your memory for what you will or may need:

Honeymoon Documents

  • Addresses for back home if you want to send postcards.
  • Airline Tickets (or if booked online your e-ticket confirmation).
  • Cards for any medical allergies and/or rare blood groups.
  • Credit Cards.
  • Hotel reservations.
  • Passports and/or Visa (as necessary) and your Driving Licence.
  • Telephone numbers in case of stolen or lost credit cards.
  • Travel Insurance.
  • Travellers checks.

A handy tip would be to take photocopies of all the above.

  • A plug adapter.
  • All your cosmetic and bathroom necessaries.
  • Any prescribed medication.
  • Cameras.
  • First aid kit.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Phone numbers for emergencies.
  • Sunscreen and glasses.
  • Travel locks and luggage ID tags.

Other things to take with you which will work out cheaper to buy and take rather than buy when you get there are:

  • A beach bag or a small backpack.
  • A deck of cards.
  • Antihistamines.
  • Cotton balls.
  • Diarrhoea Medicine.
  • Earplugs for the flight.
  • Handbag size umbrella or fold away poncho.
  • Nail File and clippers.
  • Pain killers.
  • Plasters (band-aids).
  • Sewing kit.
  • Tampons (if you know they may be needed).
  • Travel and language guide books.

Honeymoon Checklist Count down

For the months leading up to your honeymoon you should consider doing a count down monthly and then weekly. Examples are below.

Three months before the trip you should double check:

  • All reservations are fully confirmed and all deposits have been paid in full.
  • Apply for any visas that are needed.
  • As morbid as it sounds you should also consider making a sealed copy of your wills and any life insurance policies you have. Take one set with you and leave the other with a trusted family member or friend.
  • Check if any further documents are required for whatever country you are travelling to.
  • Ensure all passports are up to date and the names are correct.
  • Find out if any vaccinations are required and make a date to have them done.
  • Find out what travel insurance you will need and book it.
  • Make a list of telephone numbers for the hotel, travel agents and car rental company.
  • Obtain an E111 (European Health Insurance Card) from the post office if applicable.

Two Months before your Honeymoon:

  • Check whatever credit cards you will be using are acceptable and what, if any fees may apply. Double check your cards will still be up to date while away.
  • Check your mobile phone will work and what are the fees for calling and texting when abroad. If you are an internet browser, be sure to check the cost as you do not want to come home to a large bill.
  • Have a go at researching local restaurants in the area where you will be staying.
  • If you have any pets you will need to find them a good home while you are away or book them in to a trusted cattery/kennels.
  • Make sure all your final payments have been made.
  • Organise for someone to check your mail, water your plants and keep an eye on your home.

One month before your honeymoon:

  • Book any transport you may need to get to the airport or train station.
  • Leave a list where you can be reached with somebody in case you may need to be contacted urgently.
  • Make a list of what you will need to take and pack with you.
  • Make a list of your Itinerary plus a copy.

One Week before your Honeymoon:

  • Buy all the essentials you will need.
  • Cancel newspaper and milk deliveries.
  • Check and pack all your medicines.
  • Check in online if your flight company allows this.
  • Check your burglar alarm is working.
  • Check your camera is working and load or charge up the batteries.
  • Double check that any taxis you have booked have the correct date and times for pick up.
  • Exchange your money.
  • If you are driving give your car a full once over by checking the tyre pressures, the oil and water levels and ensure you have sufficient anti-freeze.
  • Let your neighbours know you are going to be away.
  • Look at your flight information and tickets, plus reconfirm your reservations and flight timings.
  • Make a copy of all your important documents and place in your luggage away from the originals.
  • Start your packing.

Day of Honeymoon:

  • Arrive at the airport early to avoid any last minute problems
  • Check you are fully packed and your suitcases are the correct weight.
  • Check you have all documents.
  • Consider changing your answer phone message at home but try not to give too much information about being away for a long period of time. You may also consider turning off your voicemail on your phone if you think you may be charged to listen to it.
  • Double check your flights are on time.
  • Ensure all electrical appliances are unplugged and double check all windows are closed and locked.
  • If it is winter ensure your water is turned off so your pipes don't freeze.
  • Remember to place your money and documents in your hand luggage, not in the baggage.

Check, check and check again. Your honeymoon is the first time as a married couple that you will be spending time together and for the sake of taking the time in making sure everything is in hand you can go off and enjoy every wonderful second of your perfect much awaited honeymoon.
