Honeymoon in Cyprus
Ever since Anthony gave Cyprus to Cleopatra as a token of love, this luxurious Mediterranean island has been stirring passions and attracting
honeymooners in search of a picturesque, sun-filled hotspot.
Cyprus covers over 3,500 square miles and is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. The landscape is varied with golden coastlines, pine forests and even snow-capped mountains in the winter months.
One of the most popular resorts is Paphos which is the home of the Tombs of the Kings. Its modern costal area is populated with traditional tavernas, stylish cafes and chic bars, whilst the old town is perfect for exploring its historic past.
The city of Limassol is the second largest resort on the island and offers a more lively selection of cafes and bars on the bustling seafront.
The Climate
Cyprus boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year, making this an ideal short-haul honeymoon destination during the winter.
In summer temperatures often reach over 30C and during the cooler months you can still expect a daytime temperature of around 17C. Although sunny, snow falls on the Troodos Mountains in winter creating ideal skiing conditions. So a honeymoon at the start of the year could you relaxing on the beach yet within an hour you could be skiing down the mountain!
Beaches in Cyprus
Alagadi Turtle Beach in Northern Cyprus is the famous spot where green and loggerhead turtles come to lay their eggs.
Curium Beach in Limassol one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and there is a restored Roman Amphitheatre which overlooks the coastline.
Things to do and see in Cyprus
Larnaca Salt Lake & Hala Sultan Tekke
The Larnaca Salt Lake is considered one of the most important wetlands of Cyprus and is specially protected under the Barcelona convention. In the winter months it fills with water and becomes home to over 10,000 graceful flamingos and other migratory birds, whilst in the summer the water evaporates, leaving a glistening salt crust nearly 10cm thick.
Beside the salt lake, in a tranquil setting crowned by lush palms, is the Hala Sultan Tekesi which was built to honour the aunt of the Prophet Mohammed who accompanied the Arab invaders of Cyprus in 694AD but died after falling from a mule near Larnaca. Her shrine, the third holiest in the Moslem world after Mecca and Medina is today this wonderfully peaceful sanctuary.
Aphrodite's Rock
Aphrodite's Rock is on the southwest coast, close to Paphos. Legend has it that this is the birthplace of Aphrodite (the goddess of beauty and love) and is one of the islands most famous attractions. In Greek this site is known as 'Petra trou Romiou' and in Greek mythology it is said that Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam at this point.
