The Marriage Proposal

When you meet someone that you are ready to marry, and spend the rest of your life with, you have to decide when and where to pop the question.

Where did you propose?

Let us know where you proposed, or were proposed to, so that we can place details here and maybe give inspiration to others!

"My fiance proposed to me at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt, which was the one place I has always wanted to go to. We had just come out of one of the pyramids and he was rummaging around in his rucksack and then pulled out a box and proposed there and then! It was brilliant and the pyramids weren't bad either! "I was proposed to in Sorrento, Italy. We were in our appartment and we then spent the whole day drinking Champagne and sitting by the pool soaking up the sun! It was fantastic! We are getting married in April and I can't wait!!!" Vicki Sewart

"My then boyfriend told me he was taking me out for dinner to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. I was told the venue was a surprise, but that I was not allowed to wear my favourite 7 jeans. I had to be "dressed up". He'd booked us a car at 7pm to take us to the restaurant (a little bit extravagant I thought as I asked why "we couldn't just take the car and save money!

Throughout the journey he and the cab driver (who had become part of the conspiracy - as he had to know where he was going to get us there) refused to tell me where we were heading. To my complete surprise 30 minutes later we arrived at The Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, London. My man summoned the lift and pressed the button for the 28th floor! When the doors opened we walked straight into the 'Windows of the World', which is the restaurant at the very top of the hotel, which is surrounded by glass windows. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of London.

He proposed after dinner on bended knee with the most amazing diamond ring. Several guests who were dining decided to congratulate us with a a full round of applause. It was both the most romantic and emotional moment of my life!!! My fiancé and are going to be married on Saturday 4th Nov 2006 and I can't wait!!!!" Angela

"Pete suggested we went away in the camper van, at the end of March for a night, as the evenings were getting lighter and we hadn't been away for ages, just the two of us. Pete was super keen on making sure we went and had decided we'd go to Padstow (where we spent our first anniversary) and have Rick Steins fish and chips and champagne.

We parked up in a camp site (which was deserted - it was the end of March!), went to town, came back and had our not-so-posh dinner and champagne. Pete put on a CD of really cool tunes which started with our song (Are you going to be my girl? by Jet) and got the camp fire going. As I sat there looking like a Michelin man wearing many layers he said he had a present for me and gave me a big grey plastic post bag. As I unwrapped the many layers I found a pink (my favourite colour!) Mulberry handbag - I just squealed as I have wanted a Mulberry bag for ages! I was so confused though, I couldn't work out what I had done to be given such an amazing present!

As I opened the zip to look inside Pete said it, "Will you marry me?" and I answered with "What?", I just couldn't believe it - inside the bag was a ring box! Inside my head all I could think was "THIS IS IT! HE IS ACTUALLY ASKING!" I was shaking, I couldn't look at him and tears were filling my eyes, so when he repeated the question all I could do was say "of course"! He got cross when I hadn't opened the box to see my ring but I was hugging him and didn't want to let him go - finally I saw he had bought me the most beautiful engagement ring ever, a white gold band with a pink sapphire and a diamond either side that he had had made especially.I couldn't stop crying and even Pete shed a few tears!

Pete suggested we get married in June and we settled on the 30th June 2007! Oh, and after playing the CD a few times Pete said that was pre-arranged too - the CD was actually the first 10 songs that will be played at our wedding reception! " Helen Broom

"My then boyfriend proposed to me by Portminister Beach, St.Ives, Cornwall after a lovely dinner in Portminister Cafe, which has got a lovely seaview if you are being seated by the window." Makie

"We were staying with H2B's parents over Christmas 2005 and planned on visiting Castle Coch (romantic fairytale castle in Wales) whilst there. The night before he proposed he'd been teasing me a lot (he gets a bit silly round his younger brother and sister). On the morning of the proposal I said to him, "are you going to be nice to me today?", and he replied, "so nice, you'll want to marry me!". I didn't think anything of it (haha!).

We set off for Castle Coch where I had said ages ago how I would love to be able to get married there, but it wasn't possible as my family come from East Sussex and I wanted all my family there and you can only have 30 people at the castle. We were having a picnic in the woods looking at the castle and Gareth had brought a Christmas cracker (as it was Christmas!) and when we snapped it open there was a little bag with the ring and a little note in it. I cried for ages and was embarrassed from the attention (I get embarrassed very easily) but of course I said yes!" Danielle

"On Wednesday my fiancé told me to pack some luggage, both for walking and for more elegant purposes. He was being very secretive, going off all the time to make phone calls or drive into town. The next day we got in the car and took off. I, of course, did not know where we were going. We drove up north (we live in Jutland, Denmark) and after a couple of hours he turned away from the motorway.

We came to a lovely castle where he had booked us a special room with a four-poster bed. The staff had coffee and cookies ready for us in a cosy part of the public area in the castle. After enjoying that we went for a lovely walk on the grounds. The weather was so nice and everything was so beautiful and I was very happy just being there. After our walk we went to our room to get ready for dinner. My fiancé went off a couple of times and suddenly I felt sort of nervous - he had something up his sleeve!

We came down to dinner. The dining room was so beautiful and romantic and there on our table was a huge bunch of longstemmed deep-red roses and champagne in a cooler. There was also a little giftbag. I sat down and he sat down beside me, telling me to open the giftbag. Inside was a lovely card and a little box with a diamond in it. He got down on his knees and proposed to me and I of course flung my arms around him and said yes!

The diamond is the first of many, he told me - he has an idea of how my wedding ring will look - even that I find truly romantic! Well, the evening certainly did not end there! After dinner we were going to another part of the castle - or so I believed. But instead he took me outside where I saw a magnificent carriage drawn by two horses!

Oh it was so great and the sun was shining all the time when we went for a ride. When we came back to the castle I just couldn't stop crying! That was definitely the most brilliant day of my life so far! :-) " Lone Frederiksen

""My then boyfriend had asked me what would be my ideal Christmas present. After living together for 3 years together I told him it would be an engagement ring, or a puppy (a puppy for Christmas is not right I know, but I'd been wanting one for 2 years!). "Yeah right" he replied. We then got into a rather large argument as he proceeded to tell me he never wanted to get married and he wouldn't for anyone, no matter how much he loved them!

Although I had taken it to heart, I decided that maybe marriage wasn't right for us, but I would still get a dog! I had gone out on Christmas Eve with some friends and on my return at 1am, I saw my fella sitting beside the tree with a somewhat large present under the Christmas tree and knew he'd bought me something big and fantastic to make up for being so mean to me a couple of weeks before! The present moved! My man had a habit of buying things that he'd like, like remote control cars etc so I opened it prepared for the worst with a fake smile on my face. Out leaped an 10 week old Westie which he'd picked up that evening from my parents house (who had been watching her for a week!), with an engagement ring around her collar!

Little did I know that my fiancé had bought a ring in October and kept it till the time was right, and asked my dad and all that. We're getting married next September, and after a year the puppy is as happy as can be and very much a fundamental part of the home - she even kicks us out of bed now!" Lesley

"My boyfriend proposed on a snowy mountain top in Whistler, Canada, this February. It was very romantic once I realised that he was actually being serious. Unfortunately by that point I'd already told him to get lost...... luckily I saw the ring just in time and changed my answer to YES!!" Feefo

"We have a beautiful old gaff rigged sailing boat. He dragged me out of bed on a cold February morning. Armed with bacon butties and a flask of hot tea, off we went for a sail in the Solent. Just as we were coming out of the Lymington river, unsuspectingly i thought he was getting a tissue out of his coat pocket but it was actually the ring, he whizzed round, got down on one knee and 'popped the question'. I was completely shocked and said nothing for ages just kept laughing nervously. He said "well?" and I shouted "yes of course i'll marry you! but we're about to hit that river post!" Neither of had been paying attention to where we were going. Luckily we missed the post, made it to Yarmouth and had a gorgeous lunch in the luxurious George Hotel. Me with unwashed hair and skanky Sunday morning clothes on. We just kept grinning at each other all day long. Then on the way back he brought out a bottle of Moet that he had stashed the night before. It was the best day of my life so far." Abi Rean

"My partner was terrible at proposing. He started with promising me a proposal, saying he would do it within the next year (that certainly took a lot of the surprise out of everything!!). Then he didn't do it! Then he promised to propose again - within the year. He - of course - didn't do it. I told him to stop promising a proposal - it was SO unromantic! But he said he would do it. Finally, after more than three years he got drunk on a new years eve and I knew what he was up to when he started apologizing for not doing what he should have done a long time ago. Our parents were there and I must say it must have been the worst proposal ever!" Lone Frederiksen

"My boyfriend proposed to me after we had been seeing each other for 5 months. However, we were both only 16 and 17 respectively at the time. It was 2am on New Years Day and we were both absolutely plastered. We were lying in bed talking about really random things (as you do when you're drunk!) and he went a bit quiet. He rolled over and said, 'I love you, will you marry me?' At first I thought he was joking because of the drink, only for him to explain to me he was serious. We had to wait a year (and 1 month), until I was 18, before he could do it properly with a ring, on my birthday and in front of the whole family!! Our wedding is now booked for next year, before I go to university!" Sam Collins

"My fiance took me on a trip to Egypt where I'd wanted to go since I was a child. We stayed in the most romantic hotel, right on the beach, and on our first night there we went for a walk down the pier, off the beach and then he got down on one knee. This proved trickier than you might think as he'd been snorkeling earlier that day and had got into a disagreement with some rather sharp coral, resulting in some nasty cuts down his legs. Nevertheless he got down on one knee and proposed, then took me for a lobster dinner at a seafood restaurant right on the beach. One holiday I will never forget - we're getting married in September!"
