Popular Movies that Feature a Wedding

film reelWe all love a good wedding and we love to watch movies so what’s better than having a great movie that features a wedding for getting those romantic, funny and emotional feelings fired up and a wonderful excuse to have a good old back of the throat cry!

Since the beginning of the timeless and classic black and white movies women have enjoyed scenes such as the first date, the first kiss and the final scene where the heroin walks up the aisle to the man of her dreams while we silently sob into a handkerchief.

Stories such as how they meet, the old flame showing up just as the first kiss is about to happen and somebody jealous trying to put a dampener on the relationship before it even gets off the ground can still hold us spellbound as we wait for that moment when they realise it really is true love and they can’t live without each other.

While watching just one film we can go through an avalanche of emotions such as sadness, anger, laughter and shock and inevitably the tears at the hopefully happy ending when man gets girl or visa-versa.

Listed below are just a few movies that have featured weddings and become firm favourites to watch more than once.  There are far too many to mention and I’m sure we all have our favourites.

The Graduate can be classed as one of the classic movies that features a wedding.  Stars such as Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft worked together on the famous movie scene that stopped a wedding and has been repeated time and time again in spoof shots of commercials, comedy shows and films such as Wayne’s World as well as The Simpsons.

The Runaway Bride is based on the 1947 film ‘It had to be You’ staring Ginger Rogers as the indecisive bride who kept leaving grooms at the altar. This romantic comedy was remade with Julie Roberts and Richard Gere and was also where Julie met her cameraman husband while shooting the film.

The Wedding Singer was aptly named after a failed rock star was jilted at the altar and he began singing at weddings while trying to shut out of the real world.  Adam Sandler played the terrible singer and Drew Barrymore co-starred opposite him as the wacky waitress who caught his eye and helped him get his life back on track while falling in love with each other.  Set in the mid 1980s with songs such as White Wedding and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me and a cameo part by rocker Billy Idol may make you feel the 80’s music is something to steer clear of at your own wedding reception.

Four Weddings and a Funeral is hailed as one of Britain’s top all time romantic comedies and one that made Hugh Grant an overnight star.  This movie centres on bachelor Charles who is indecisive and unwilling to commit to any one woman.  One by one he attends the weddings of his best friends’ and keeps running into American Carrie who causes him to get tongue tied as neither one can decide on each other.  This 1994 movie also threw Elizabeth Hurley into the limelight with the wearing of that famous sexy black dress done up at the sides by gold safety pins and one we all dreamed of wearing.

Father of the Bride with Steve Martin and Diane Keaton was a remake of the original film that starred Spencer Tracy.  A romantic comedy that is based more on the parents of the bride and the planning involved with hosting a wedding and seen through the eyes of a father’s emotions as he learns to let go of his little girl.  Scenes of a hilarious wedding planner taking over the wedding and how extra costs can all be added while father tries hard to cut them.

Muriel’s Wedding can be classed as a modern day Cinderella story.   This film is not the typical romantic comedy because it deals with cancer and suicide.  The story line is about Muriel who spends her days alone listening to Abba songs and dreaming of her own wedding, even though she had not got a boyfriend or ever had a date.  After stealing some money she runs away to go on a tropical holiday and meets a wacky friend who turns her life upside down.  A sweet yet at times sad movie that starred Australian Toni Collette has a very touching and moving storyline.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is based on the real life experiences of Nia Vardalos, a Greek Winnipeg-based actress. A very funny movie and certainly one of the most close up on culture of a different country’s customs and traditions regarding weddings. Toula is a thirty year old woman who her family believe has ‘failed’ in life - she has no have babies and does not spend her time in the kitchen feeding everybody. She meets a school teacher after taking up computer lessons.  After a secret whirlwind courtship Ian is willing to convert to the Greek Orthodox faith and Toula’s meat eating family feels it’s a crisis when they find out he is a vegetarian.  Unable to say Khristos Anesti (Christ is risen) it comes out Cheese straws are nasty to the amusement of the younger members of the family.

Tom Hanks is the big name behind making this funny movie but not in acting role.  He had his work cut out with trying to convince Vardalos to add more kissing and smooching scenes in the movie.

My Best Friend’s Wedding is another Julia Roberts movie where she co-starred with Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney. Characters Julianne Potter and Michael O'Neil make a pact to marry each other if they are still single by the time they reach 28 but just as Julianne is about to turn 28 Michael gets engaged and asks Julianne to help with the wedding.  It is then Julianne realises she is actually in love with her best friend and tries everything possible to stop the wedding taking place.   The added bonus of the DVD for this movie is the helpful wedding hints.

Some of the latest’s movies that feature around a wedding are Mama Mia and Brides at War that seem to find a steady stream of brides-to-be wanting not only to enjoy the film but to see if any ideas can be picked up or indeed any disasters that can be forewarned and rectified.

Maybe in a way your own planning and preparation can be likened somewhat to one or two of the above movies if you look hard enough, and there is no reason why your own special day can’t be just as magical, memorable, comical and romantic with your very own happy every after ending.
