Flowers for a Church Wedding

church flowers 1Decorating a church for a wedding can add a romantic and magical touch to an already special day and with the vast array of flowers and colours in each season you as the Bride and Groom-to-be should find it very easy to choose church flowers that match your wedding colours and ones that will blend in with the church surroundings.

There are plenty of areas in the church where you can place your flowers; from a single flower tied to a bow at the end of each pew to beautiful pedestal decorations, depending on your budget.

Remember though that as beautiful as the church will look filled with flowers surrounding you both while saying your vows to each other, it will not be the place you will be in for very long and you should consider spending more expense on your reception venue where you and your guests will spend many happy hours.

Always check with the vicar with regard to church flowers as they may have their own florist who regularly does the flowers for them and this may well bring the cost down.

Some vicars at certain times of the year do not allow flowers and this is something that needs to be looked into when you are booking your church wedding so you can eliminate the cost of the flowers from your budget.

Flower Locations

church flowers 2There are plenty of different locations around the church where you can place your flowers, such as:

  • Each Pew end; or every other one to cut down on costs. It will still look just as pretty.
  • Flowers around the church entrance - this is ideal for photographs on a windy or wet day.
  • Pedestals which most churches have on hand that you can use.
  • The Altar.
  • The Choir Stall.
  • The Pulpit Stand.
  • The table where you will sign the register.

If you are having a church wedding and your budget does not run to church flowers, there are a few ways you may still be able to have them without having to dig too deep into your pocket. With some careful planning you can decorate the church to match your budget and some ideas and suggestions are as follows:

  • Check with the vicar if there is to be a wedding on the same day or weekend as yours as the other couple may be willing to share the costs with you with flowers that compliment both your wedding colours.
  • Somebody you know may have a large garden where you can pick wild flowers and greenery to make your own bundles of flowers tied with ribbons.
  • Use flowers that can be easily transported to the reception after the church ceremony. Pew ends could be used again as table decorations and any pedestal arrangements that are easy to pick up and transport can be placed around your reception venue.
  • You may be getting married at a time when the church is already filled with an abundance of flower arrangements in place, such as Christmas, Easter, Harvest Festival or Lent.

church flowers 3For the more budget conscious couples choosing inexpensive and large flowers with plenty of greenery will certainly keep the costs down rather than going with flowers such as lilies and roses.

If you really want roses added to your flowers then you can intersperse a few here and there among the reasonably priced flowers such as carnations and daisies.

When you are planning where to place the flowers, it may be a good idea to sit at the back of the church so you can see what your guests will actually be able to see. There is no point in placing flowers anywhere that will not be seen by at least half of your guests.

Remember the church is a place of worship and your flowers should be chosen with care as a mark of respect.

Shades of one colour and white flowers are traditionally used in church weddings!
