I'm afraid to say florists can be some of the worse offenders for this I've watched some people pay good money for what i'd class as rubbish! yes we need to make a living but there's no need to rip people off!

I agree with you too Fay :)
The reason i went for artificial flowers was because in Miami as soon as you mentioned the fact it was wedding flowers they doubled the price.

Also quotes for hair and make up were ridicilous from some people.
I had one quote for $450 dollars for brides make up and for the bridesmaid to have exactly the same it was only $150 dollars!!

What was the reason for the difference? They must have tried to justify it in some way.

I agree with the flowers too. We are having silk too but some fresh for the venue. Haven't got them sorted yet but the quotes are awful. Considering doing them myself now

Hair and make up too

Well i was indeed abit cheeky and asked the woman why so much for the bride compared to the bridesmaid, she clarified that it included the fitting of the tiara and veil (bugger that i can do it myself and dont need to pay someone loads to put it on) lol :P
And i didnt book with her in the end.
I managed to get a good deal with a lady who is doing us both for $305 Dollars.
I got around 10 quotes and this lady seemed to be the best in giving me the information and details i needed, i then told her my cheapest quote and we agreed on a deal.

I have been collecting price lists for hair and make up and its stupid the regular prices are a good 50% less than the bridal prices. how is that even fair?

I hate to say that its true!! Having my own wedding business it really annoys me that some suppliers (I must hasten to add not all but more than I like to admit) do wack up the price. They seem to think that just because you say the word "wedding" that you, as a bride, or your parents, have this neverending budget to dip into and will pay anything to have that item for your special day.

Having sourced a particular item for a bride recently I was shocked to see it on another site priced at £3.00 more than I was selling it for and I was still making a profit. Perhaps I shouldnt be so honest and possibly will never be rich but surely its all about making someone's day happy and special. I love seeing a bride's face when you produce the items and also being part of something special - maybe I'm too sentimental...?!

PS will probably not be liked by other suppliers now....

Yeah, you certainly do get ripped off. The venue for my meal and reception usually charge £35 for a 3 course set meal, yet when it's a wedding, it suddenly becomes £63 a head. Erm...how?!

I know, that must be it, Jane! Other than that 1 little word, I can't see any other difference between a 3 course normal meal and a wedding breakfast!

Good luck with your booking. When I got married our venue wasn't too impressed when my husband and I refused to pay for a buffet. As we pointed out, we were having a small wedding and all our guests were staying for the evening reception with the exception of a few work friends and as it was a late wedding breakfast would not want to eat lots of food again.

Eventually after a lot of wrangling we managed to argue for canapes only and drastically reduced our venue costs!!

First decision I made was to avoid mentioning 'wedding' whenever possible. Second decision was to make sure I pass the tip/warning along to family and friends who might also have to pay out for stuff.

A lot of my boyfriends family are probably going to hire a coach up since they live in the same area and it's about an hour and a half away, will definately make sure to tell them not to mention a wedding when they book!

My Fiancé paid that first time around and six people just didn't turn up! Not a phone call, apology, not even excuses afterwards, nothing.
Apparently it distracted her from having a good time for the rest of the day as she couldn't help thinking about the £600 that had just been completely wasted!

I hate to play devil's advocate here, but for some things, the extra cost really is justified. For example, if your venue has to refuse other bookings because your wedding party is there, or if it is an evening function, and they have to not take lunch bookings because the room needs setting up, that seems fair enough to me, and certainly enough to justify the extra cost - they are a business after all. Even if your reception is only half the day, it has to be set up beforehand....

With flowers, hair etc I suppose the justification is that your wedding really is a one-off event, think how devastated you would be if your hair looked a mess because the hairdresser rushed during a standard consultation, whereas other occasions generally happen again - if you don't look great today, you could look great next week.
