Hi Guys,

Just wanting opinions really! forgive me if this is a bit of a long winded story!

Right so basically we have adopted 2 of my neighbours cats from our street. Basically my neighbours do not look after them they are constantly outside never allowed in their house and were fed outside and since they have been coming into my house they are no longer even fed outside! the bowls have disappeared I now feed them both. Anyway one of them is VERY old! he is very scruffy and sneezy and generally tatty but he's gorgeous and loving and we have both become extremely attached to him, now he has been coming into our house and eating / sleeping here for around in total 2 years now! I even bought a warm cat house and put a blanket in for him for in the winter when it's freezing cold and we are at work as he seems to get worse in winter. Anyway after a few months of letting them in one of the neighbours teenage kids noticed them in my kitchen through the window and she came knocking on my door shouting at me telling me to stop letting them in which I did stop doing for a few weeks even tho the cats still kept trying to run in the house and would sit at the window looking sad at me! but then one day I'd just had enough it was absolutely chucking it down and thunder and lighting and I watched them just walk past the old one outside and ignore him in that weather! so I gave in and just started letting them in again but in secret! lol! they only come in through the back door and if their left in the kitchen ever then we close the blinds however I think she knows they come in the house still as I say she has stopped putting food out for them altogether now (the younger one I have adopted too seems to have many homes!).

Right so heres the thing 2 weeks ago I noticed the old one sitting on my fence and he had a yellow discharge coming from his eye and it looked really sore anyway I stopped to look at him out in my front garden then went inside about 10 minutes later his owner had a look at it so I felt relieved she had noticed and hoped she would take him to the vet however it has now been 2 weeks I have been keeping an eye on it and bathing it in cold tea and water etc and keeping it clean however I think it must be an infection as it's not clearing it up at all. They obviously haven't taken him to the vet despite clearly knowing he has an infected eye :( I am fed up of waiting and seeing how bad it is getting now and today me and hubby are going to take him to the vet ourselves he is practically our cat anyway although it is secret I just feel really frustrated I think they do know he still comes in our house but nothing is ever said I wish they would just let us have him as they obviously don't care! my mom suggested going round and saying he's in my garden alot and had they noticed his eye is bad? etc but I just don't feel comfortable going round there and there is no gurantee they will take him the vets either so we just thought we would take him ourselves do you think that is the right thing to do? would you do the same?! my mom has already called the vets about the situation and they have said they would never refuse to see and ill animal and they know the situation.

Just wanted general opinions!

Thank you
xxx

Im a huge animal lover like you hun & would be wanting to take him to the vets too - but im just wondering if thats what next door is expecting, so they don't have to fork out for him? :( Sad if so. But it's not fair to let the poor little mite suffer either.

They sound horrid people & seems better off with you xx

sorry thats not really a helpful reply :-/

If the rspca get involved, the family may actually sign them over to you.

its a hard situation :( maybe its better if you go to them and just say you really want to take him to the vets, is it ok? And that you're willing to rehome him with you, not sure how else to go about it x

Why not call your local police station and ask for their advice?

Explain the situation and tell them you are worried that if you speak to the neighbour you may start a 'feud' with them and if you don't speak to them and take the cat to the vets, and they find out, you may start a 'feud' and be in trouble with the police.

I am sure they will offer you the best advice :)

aww bless you for being so caring :)

Are the family the kind you can go and talk to and ask them if they would let you adopt the cats and kittens?

Hope you get it sorted soon for the sake of their health, which I'm sure in your hands wont be a issue.

I think David is thinking along the right lines here - maybe even call a vet local to you and explain the situation? I'm sure they would have had to do similar in the past. Poor kitties :( xx

Aw that's awful poor things. Yeh I would be taking them to the vets too! I would try and talk to them and if it didn't go well I would contact the RSPCA. I can't see them not letting you have them as they always need people to rehome animals.

Just an update guys we ended up kinda making up a story that we thought our cat had hurt his eye accidentally when playing and we felt guilty about it so did they mind if we took him to the vets I spoke to the neighbours son who said it was fine so he's been seen to now and seems like his eye is getting better :) phew! I thought maybe the sons mom would come over and ask how it went but nope! just shows you how much they actually care!

I love that cat to bits we consider him our own I feed him and provide a loving home for him he has a bed with us and sleeps in our house every night without fail I even arrange for someone to come and feed him for us too while we are on holiday. I wouldn't want to risk ringing the police / RSPCA for 2 reasons I couldn't risk losing him I love him to bits and also I do not want anymore trouble with any neighbours we already have 2 others who hate us and have disputes with us over a driveway situation I couldn't stand any more trouble :(

Main thing is he is sorted now and on the mend :)
