The Larmer Tree Gardens

larmer treeSet within the depths of the south Wilshire countryside the Larmer Tree Gardens is ideal for those wanted to add that touch of romantic setting to an outdoor wedding.

The spectacular gardens on the Rushmore Estate were created in 1880 by General Pitt Rivers as a pleasure ground for ‘public enlightenment and entertainment’ and they can boast as being one of the most unusual gardens in the country.

Stunning views of the surrounding countryside are set high on the Cranborne Chase on the boundary between Dorset and Wiltshire.

Once an ancient royal hunting ground, King John (1189-1216) used to convene with his huntsmen underneath the “Larmer” tree on hunting days.

Victorian Settings

Weddings held in the Larmer Tree Gardens are truly unique with exceptionally beautiful views and settings which have been restored over the last 10 years.

Within the 11 acre garden there is an extraordinary example of Victorian vision and extravagance with ornamental pheasants and peacocks, intimate arbours and a stunning collection of ornate buildings.

The open air theatre has a variety of concerts, fairs and musical entertainment that are held regularly during the high season.

Venues to Hold Ceremonies

The gardens offer three venues to get married in and their newly ‘Secret Garden’ is for small and intimate celebrations that can take place during the week on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesdays.  The maximum number of guests is 25.

The small circular Roman Temple offers civil ceremonies for the bride and groom and 6 guests while the panelled walled Generals Room with beautiful turquoise tiles and hand blown glass urns can accommodate up to 19 people.

When wedding ceremonies are held in either of these venues there is a section within the private part of the garden that is set aside for a small reception that will be exclusive to you and your guests.

For bigger weddings there is The Pavilion with its ‘Colonial’ feel can seat up to 100 guests and the Gardens can offer a Marquee if a larger reception is to take place.

Catering facilities of menus from a three course meal to a cold buffet can be requested and dining usually takes place in the Victorian Pavilion.

Strolling Around the Gardens

While waiting for your photographs to be taken you can rest in the knowledge that your guests will be able to entertain themselves in strolling around the gardens where they will come across the stable block, gift shop, croquet, play and picnic areas, as well as taking in the delightful sights of the gardens and buildings.

A striking rich tapestry of coloured hydrangeas towering over the ponds during the summer months and the pure-white flowering eucryphia with its glossy green leaves during the autumn months will make a spectacular backdrop to your wedding photographs.

Getting married amongst the roaming peacocks and majestic trees can take you into an enchanting and timeless atmosphere which will all help towards building memories of enjoying your perfect wonderful day.
