Getting Married at Milton Abbey, Dorset
Once a Benedictine monastery and family home to Sir John Tregonwell who arranged the divorce between King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Milton Abbey is now an independent school for boys.
This magnificent and historical estate has various suites of room that are available only during the school’s holiday periods to host weddings and receptions.
Resting below gentle hills with a backdrop of breathtaking views the estate is in a secluded and beautiful heart shaped confluences of valleys within the Dorset Downs.
Areas to Hold your Wedding and Receptions
Milton Abbey has many fantastic rooms for holding both your service and your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Here are some of them.
With a truly impressive collection of royal portraits, the Kings Room is considered one of the most attractive settings to hold your civil ceremony and one that can accommodate a large number of guests. With its elegant fireplace and wonderful views of the grounds, you can almost imagine what it must have been like in the days of knights and their ladies. This room is also large enough to be used later in the evening for dancing.
Abbots Hall built in 1498 is the only original room left of the monastery and has survived the erosion of time and history. A wedding breakfast for up to 120 people can be held within the hall and evening receptions can also be held here. The majestic fireplace is still in use and would be a fabulous backdrop to your winter/autumn wedding photographs.
For smaller and more intimate wedding parties there is the Library. This serene room houses some of the most beautiful ceilings within the estate.
Built in c.933 AD by King Athelstan of Wessex the Abbey Church is available for weddings by arrangements.
The grounds/gardens can also be used for receptions during the summer months.
Your wedding party will have exclusive use of the State Rooms, Abbot’s Great Hall and the Mansion House as well as the drawing room and bar and a self-contained flat that is available for the bride and family. You will also be given full use of the magnificent grounds.
