The Archers - First Gay Wedding

The Archers, the world’s longest-running radio soap opera will be celebrating its first ‘gay wedding’ this week.

The local farmer Adam Macy (played by Andrew Wincott) is to marry his partner of two and half year’s chief, Ian Craig (played by Stephen Kennedy). The soap has followed in the footsteps of many popular TV soaps such as EastEnders, Emmerdale Farm, Coronation Street and Brookside, by introducing a gay storyline and in doing so has widened its appeal to attract a gay audience.

In a poll recently carried out for the programmes website, The Independent reported that “nearly 7,000 respondents, a fifth thought it was wrong because same-sex marriages were inappropriate”. So it appears more work still needs to be down to chance the attitudes of those that object to same-sex marriages.

As a consequence many gay couples continue to face discrimination when it comes to organising their wedding. This year however has proved to be a turning point as thousands of same-sex couples have been able to seal their union through a Civil Partnership Ceremony .
