10-JUN-2005 | Biojewellery....

Scientists have come up with the rather innovative idea of creating Biojewellery.

The Royal College of London and the Royal College of Art are currently working on a joint project, which could offer couples a more organic look to the traditional wedding ring. Their idea is to make a wedding ring which is made from bio-engineered bone tissue cultured from wisdom teeth.

This pioneering work will take place this summer at Guy’s Hospital. A select number of volunteers will have bones cells extracted which will then be “seeded” onto a bioactive platform that will allow the cells to divide and multiple into the desired shape. After several weeks the platform will disintegrate and all that will be left is living bone tissue. The bone tissue will be transferred to the Royal College Art where they will combined it with more traditional precious metals to create an ivory-coloured ring.

So if you ever wondered what to do with the teeth you have pulled why not give them to the one you love in the shape of biojewellery!
