5-AUG-2005 | Britain’s First Civil Partnerships

Denmark led the way in Europe’s first same-sex weddings in 1989.

Sixteen years later the British government have introduced changes in legislation to The Civil Partnership Bill which will give same-sex couples similar rights to that of married heterosexual couples regarding issues such as parental rights, pensions, housing and bereavement.

The Act will come into force on 5th December, which will then enable Civil Partnership ceremonies to take place on 20th December. Bright and Hove are set to host Britain first same-sex weddings.

As with any change progress can often seem slow, but it is currently being hampered by a loop hole in the new law whereby local authorities in England and Scotland are choosing only to provide registration for same-sex couples but not conduct ceremonies as they are not legally obliged to do so.

Therefore the fight for equality for same-sex couples will have to continue.
