Drink Drive Wedding Guests

As the wedding season gets into swing many of you could find yourself attending weddings in the middle of nowhere, and in this situation most people will get their partner to drive.

It appears, however, according to a survey by Privilege Insurance, nearly one in three drivers (32%) said they were willing to take their chances by driving home, even though they knew they were over the limit. Further to this there were 10% of wedding guests that said they would be happy to drive within three hours of having a drink.

If that wasn’t alarming enough is was found that almost 17% of drivers drove home after consuming more that 10 units of alcohol, the equivalent of 5 pints of beer.

Ian Parker, Managing Director of Privilege Insurance, said: "Although we want people to have a great time at weddings this summer, we urge guests not to get into their cars until they've allowed sufficient time for the alcohol from the night before to leave their system - waiting roughly one hour after the festivities have finished for every unit of alcohol consumed. “

The current legal drink drive limit for driving in the U.K. is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millitres of blood.

What does this really equate to?

Well it’s impossible to say with any certainty as everybody absorbs alcohol into their body at different rates, depending on a whole host of factors including their weight, size, metabolic rate, age, and whether they are on any medication.

In reality the only way to be sure you are safe to get behind the wheel of a car and drive home is to not drink at all. Plan ahead and book yourself a taxi or share the cost with other wedding guests by booking a minibus.

Don’t spoil the bride and grooms wedding by being another statistic!
