18-JUN-2005 | First Legal Humanist Wedding

Today will see the first legal humanist wedding take place in the UK.

Karen Watts, 29, and Martin Reijns, 27, will be married in a landmark ceremony at the mansion house in the Royal Zoological Gardens of Edinburgh.

Until now non-religious ceremonies required a second, civil ceremony, to make them legal. New laws pasted in Scotland earlier this year allow couples to wed without the need of a minister or civil registrar.

The couple meet six years ago at a Salsa dance class in Holland. Martin, a PhD student, originally from Holland and Karen, a community development worker, from County Clare in Ireland have since set up home together in Edinburgh.

Both Martin and Karen wanted a non-religious ceremony and so looked into the option of a humanist wedding. Karen, said “We felt it fit really well with what we were looking for and liked the fact we could write our own vows. It makes it much more personal.”
