Church offers low-cost wedding packages
With wedding costs continuing to spiral out of control, a growing number of couples find themselves either forced to wait several years, or taking out loans to pay for their Big Day.
One local church is hoping to buck the trend; they have set up a scheme to help struggling couples to afford wedding costs.
Mottram Parish Church has designed its own wedding package. The service relies on the goodwill on church members and on wedding related companies offering to slash their prices to help cash-strapped couples.
Rev Philip Burrows, the brains behind the scheme, came up with the idea after couples found themselves having to postpone their wedding due escalating costs.
The Thameside Advertiser reported that a spokeswoman for the church said:
"We did get a lot of people throughout the year coming to church wanting to get married. They would book the church, come to see the vicar and then call it off because they couldn’t afford it. It’s not our charges but all the bits and pieces they’re expected to provide.
"So the vicar thought there should be some sort of wedding package where people in church could volunteer their services. For example, we have someone who does crafts in church who might do the invitations or someone else who has a friend who owns limousines.
"If they pay for it they could drive it."
The scheme has proved to be such a success that the church hopes to extend their wedding package to include the talents of wedding planners.
