06-NOV-2005 | Michael Rogers proposes - On top of the world...

Michael Rogers, from Manchester took to the skies to propose to his girlfriend.

Michael, 31, overcame his fear of heights as he went down on bended knee on the glass floor of the VIP carriage of Manchester’s big wheel to ask Gemma Darcy, 23, to marry him.

Gemma, a credit controller from Middleton was overjoyed at Michael’s show of affection, particularly as Michael is not very big on romantic gestures.

Michael, a drayman, told the Manchester Evening News: "I would have liked to have taken Gemma away somewhere romantic, but we have just bought a house and are a little bit skint, so I couldn't afford it. I still wanted to do something different, so I decided to take her up in the big wheel. It was really difficult keeping it a secret. Everyone knew except Gemma because I told both families beforehand."

Michael was still able to provide Gemma with a romantic setting as he serenaded her 60 metres in the air, in the VIP gondola complete with a plasma screen, luxury leather seats and a bottle of champagne on ice.

Michael told the paper: "It was a bit scary when I went down on bended knee on the glass floor. I had to stop myself from looking down, but Gemma loved it. She said `Yes' straight away. She told me later she was surprised because she didn't think I had a romantic bone in my body."

With the cost of getting married continuing to escalate its important that the couple try and keep a tight rein on their budgets. Michael wanted to tie the knot with Gemma in an unforgettable setting and he was still able to achieve it without having to go abroad.
