21-MAR-05 | Fancy a pork pie for a wedding cake?

It may sound odd, but a couple from West Yorkshire decided that they wanted a three-tiered pork pie, weighing in at a whopping 50lbs (22.6kg)!

Stuart and Joanne Booth will not be cutting the traditional fruit cake this Saturday, rather slicing into portions of a championship-winning pork pie, made in Hudersfield and served complete with mushy peas.

The pork pie wedding cake will be the highlight of the day as Stuart and his wife to be, Joanne Robinson, tie the knot at the Huddersfield Register Office then hold their reception at the Pennine Manor Hotel.

Talking of the pork pie cake Joanne had this to say, "We both agreed that we don't really like fruitcake, and our friends thought it was a good idea to have a pie. I was not really into pork pies until I met Stuart, but once you are with someone who is a pork pie enthusiast, it does rub off on you."

Stuart added: "It was the first time the butcher had been asked to do one and it made us both feel extra special. A pie goes well with a pint, and a good pie is better than a piece of steak any day."

The pie is being made by Hinchliffe's Farm Shop in Netherton.
