09-JUL-2005 | Japan prepares for contemporary royal wedding

Princess Sayako is to marry later this year. For centuries the tradition within the royal family has been to not attend the wedding ceremonies of their female members. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko intend to break from tradition and will attend the wedding reception of their only daughter, in November.

Princess Sayako, 35, will marry one of Japans top leading businessmen, Yoshiki Kuroda, 40, in a Shinto ceremony at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. The happy couple are expecting over one hundred people to attend, including other royal family members.

Princess Sayako has made a huge sacrifice in choosing to marry a man with no royal connection, as she will have to leave the Japanese royal family after the marriage.

I admire Princess Sayako; strong resolve to marry for love rather than for duty. It could not have been an easy decision but one, which I’m pleased to see, has the wholehearted support of her family.
