Sheriff offers to Marry Bank Robbers

US Sheriff, Ron Kalanquin has offered to marry two suspected bank robbers. The un-named 24-year-old male and his 23- year-old girlfriend have been compared with Bonnie and Clyde as they made off with $5,000 (£2,500) in cash.

They've already used some of the loot to buy themselves wedding rings, clothes and to pay their overdue rent and legal fees in the woman's child custody case.

The couple held up the Lapeer county Bank and Trust branch in Deerfield Township, near Detroit, with a fake firearm on 19 September; and have been on the run ever since.

If caught the couple could face up to life imprisonment, under Michigan state law.

Sheriff, Ron Kalanquin has offered to marry the couple provided they give themselves up.

The Sheriff was reported to have told BBC Five Live: "In my experience, I have found that when these young people are cornered they will do irrational things and I'm trying to convince them to give themselves up,"

He went on to suggest they might be tempted to commit another robbery: "perhaps with a real pistol and maybe a different result".

The couple are still thought to be at large in the local area but police have also widened their search to Michigan and beyond.

Police have urged the public if they have any information on the whereabouts of the suspects that they come forward immediately.

The search still goes on.
