Spring / Easter Themed Wedding

santa brideSpring is a wonderful time of the year to have your wedding. Just like the opening of new flowers and the hatching of chicks so your marriage signifies the start of a new life together, the start of a blossoming future!

There are many colours which represent the dawn of spring including white, yellow, pink and cream which can be complimented by light shades of blue and green.

With your wedding colours chosen you might want to consider an Easter or May Day themed wedding.

In each of the sections below you'll find some great ideas on how to incorporate an Easter or May Day theme into your Spring Themed Wedding.

Spring Themed Bride

During spring the weather is very unpredictable, from bursts of sunshine to torrential downpours, so it would make sense to choose a fabric that is suitable for a changing climate such as silk georgette or satin.

Consider investing in a bolero or simply have chiffon draped around your arms in case the weather should turn cold.

Have one of your ushers on stand-by with a wedding umbrella should you need to take shelter from an April shower.

easter bonnetRather than wearing a traditional tiara and veil to compliment your dress, if you are having an Easter themed wedding, how about considering wearing an Easter bonnet which could be decorated with seasonal flowers.

You could also wear a full shirt or ballerina style wedding dress, perhaps a full length gown with your hair free flowing and decorated with seasonal flowers. You could also have flower or butterfly hair pins.

Spring Themed Groom

It was traditional for men to wear fine linen shirts on May Day. Why not adapt this custom to your wedding attire and go for a contemporary light coloured linen suit with a white shirt. Your button hole could be a large daisy or daffodil perhaps.

The Bridesmaids dresses could coordinate with the groom by either being the same colour, or white with a sash the same colour as the groom's suit.

For that Easter theme spin have your Flower Girl carry a basket of mini chocolate eggs which coordinate with your colour theme.

If your wedding is a rather more informal affair then have your Flower Girl or Pageboy dress as an Easter Bunny.

Bridesmaids could wear flowers in their hair. Reenact the age old tradition and have your Flower Girl drop rose petals as you walk up the aisle.

Spring Themed Photography

If you have children attending the wedding you could entertain them whilst the photographs are being taken by sending them off on an Easter egg treasure hunt, or something both children and adults could join in, a good old fashioned dance around a maypole >>

Both these would make excellent photo opportunities that will never be found at a traditional wedding.

Replace the traditional 5 sugared almonds with mini Easter eggs or Easter bunnies. Personalise Easter eggs with your name and date of your wedding. You could make some homemade Easter biscuits >> to give your guests.

Give your guests wild flower seeds that they can sow in their own gardens as a reminder of your wedding day.

Another option would be to give them nuts! It was believed people used to gather nuts in May, perhaps this is all the more reason to give your guests the 5 sugared almonds afterall :)

Spring Themed Wedding Cake

Have an oval shaped wedding cake and decorate the cake with Easter motifs such as the Easter bunny, chicks and Easter eggs. Make one of the cake tiers from chocolate.

Or maybe have a plain white cake decorated using Spring colours and flowers. You could use mini May Poles to separate the different tiers of your wedding cake.

If you're getting married in a church it's more than likely that the church will already be decorated for the festive period.

If not in a church you could decorate the venue with ribbons in your chosen colour theme and scented small white flowers of hawthorn. Add some butterfilies to bring some colour and vibrance to really set off that Spring theme.

A great focal point could be a May Pole decorated with ribbons to match your wedding colours.

Spring Themed Wedding Stationery

Use blank Easter cards and consider making your own using symbols of Easter ranging from the Cross (if your having a religious ceremony), Easter eggs and bunnies. Another option is to use simple cards decorated with flowers.

Spring themed Wedding Breakfast / Evening Reception

Use seasonal foods in your wedding breakfast. Offer spring lamb with mint sauce. Offer Simnel Cake >> a classic Easter fruit cake. Red herring was a popular dish to eat during the time of Lent. If you're not keen on herring then why not offer the English favourite prawn cocktail as one of your starters.

Another great Spring option is bannock / oatcakes coated with baked on custard and a selection of nuts, or cakes with nuts. Remember to check with your guests if any of them suffer from any nut allergies and if so offer them an alternative.

Continue your colour theme with the table decorations. Use seasonal flowers or a jar of bright coloured Easter eggs for table centre pieces.

Have egg or bonnet shaped name places in your chosen colour theme. Scatter some egg shaped confetti across the table cloths.

Revive the May Day tradition and have the Bride sit on a flower-decked chair as she watches over their guests

Spring Themed Wedding Music

If  your have a religious wedding, have the church bells rung. Include the classic Spring hymns "Morning has Broken" and "All things Bright and Beautiful" in the wedding ceremony

Have one of the wedding participates read a poem such as On May Morning by John Milton

Now the bright morning Star, Day's harbinger,
Comes dancing from the East, and leads with her
The Flowery May, who from her green lap throws
The yellow Cowslip, and the pale Primrose.
Hail bounteous May that dost inspire
Mirth and youth, and warm desire,
Woods and Groves, are of thy dressing,
Hill and Dale, doth boast thy blessing.
Thus we salute thee with our early Song,
And welcome thee, and wish thee long.

The Bride and Groom could have their first dance around a May Pole, where they could then be joined by their guests.

Have music playing from an accordion or continue to revel in the coming of spring by having a ceilidh band play at your evening reception.

  • Purchase things for your wedding in the sales, so Spring items once Summer arrives.
  • Source foods locally.
  • Use seasonal flowers.
  • Have bridal attendants carry a basket of coloured eggs (hard boiled eggs) rather than spend money on posies.
  • A big plus to having your wedding in the Spring is it will already be cheaper as it is the low season for weddings.
